Glossary of Quilting Terms

Backing: The fabric that goes on the backside of a quilt.

Border: Strips of fabrics sewn to the edges of your quilt used to frame it. You may choose to have more than one border. If you have two, one is called the inside border and the other the outside border. These may be different widths.

Sashing: Fabric strips that separates the various blocks, framing them.

Stitch in the Ditch: A means of sewing (quilting) your top quilt section to your batting and backing sections by sewing inside your seam line.

Tied Quilt: This is where instead of using stitching to hold your 3 layers together you tie your quilt in various spaces throughout your quilt. Quite often done in the corners and center squares.
