You need 1/4 yd. of each of two pieces of fabric such as a print and
matching solid.
From these cut:
1 piece of each 18" X 9"
2 pieces of the print fabric (or one piece of each) 6" square
1 piece of either fabric 6" X 3"
1 piece of plain fabric approx. 4.25 X 6"
OR
1 piece of plain fabric approx. 8.5 X 3.5"
1 piece of aquarium tubing 18" long (99 cents at Wal-Mart)
1 .75" piece of .25" dowel
1 ceramic tile approx. 4 - 4.25" square*
1 piece of magnetic strip 4" long
fabric glue
a little bit of stuffing
Usual sewing supplies including zipper or cording foot for your sewing
machine and a hand sewing needle.
*The tile is for weight sandwiched between the fabric layers for the part
that lays flat on the table. The ones I saw did not have any weight in them.
As a matter of fact they had only cardboard. I bought the tile in Lowes for
14 cents. If you come up with something that works feel free to do your own
thing.
INSTRUCTIONS
Cut fabrics into the pieces above.
Fold one bag piece in half , wrong side out, and seam with a 1/4" seam. Do
the same with the other piece of the bag.
Press the seams open, leaving wrong sides out. The seam should be in the
middle of the back of the fabric.
Seam across one end. This is the bottom.
Open out the bottom seam so it is flat. Place that bottom seam against one
of the sides. Make a line of stitching across the corner, 1 inch in from the
corner. Do the same on the other side. Trim off the corners.
Turn the printed piece right side out and poke out corners of flat part of
bottom. Press if you wish. Leave the lining (plain piece) wrong side out and
place in the other bag.
Press under raw edges, fold down about 1.25 of an inch. Make a very narrow
header - just wide enough to be able to sew the tabs to it. Then make a
casing leaving an opening in the back. Remember that the tubing will take up
more room than flat elastic would. Thread aquarium tubing thru the opening,
put a .75" piece of 1/4" dowel in both ends to hold them together and then
sew shut.
Take the 6 X 3" piece of fabric and place wrong sides together. Sew across
one short end and down the long side to other end. Cut in half and turn
right side out. Turn in edge of one end of the piece that has two open ends
and edge stitch closed.
Sew around three sides of the square, placing the ends of the tubes in one
side so that they are about 2.5" apart and hanging out of the square,
leaving the end opposite the tubes open. Trim seams and turn.
Slip the tile in the pocket and slip stitch or machine stitch closed.
sew tubes to pocket along upper edge and below tubing.
Fold the 4.24 X 6" or 8.5 X 3.5" plain piece of fabric in half and sew in a
narrow seam leaving a small opening. Turn right side out.
Stuff the “pillow” and then slip stitch or machine stitch the opening closed
and glue onto flat base towards the back.
Glue the magnetic strip towards the front of the flat piece.
